Primary applications include large Class I MOD preparations in posterior permanent teeth, pediatric stainless steel crown preparations where the pulp chamber is large and a substantial volume of soft dentin needs to be cleared quickly, and any carious preparation wide enough that a 1.5 mm blade requires an excessive number of strokes to achieve complete excavation.
